  Adult ESL Tutoring Program

< top>

Refugee Transitions' ESL Civics Education and Orientation Program, is a home-based volunteer program in which volunteers teach English to adults in students' homes. Volunteers are currently needed to teach in San Francisco and Oakland.

Refugee Transitions provides preparatory training and resources to support volunteers, as well as the unique opportunity for volunteers to teach English as a Second Language to refugees and immigrants in the students' home environments.

Together, the student and tutor address the life skills which the student has identified as the most important. Tutors also help students to learn the language and literacy skills needed to engage more actively in community activities, and to access important civic institutions and community resources.

Our Students
Our students come from all over the world; at present we are serving clients from more than 15 different countries. We focus in this program on giving priority to students who are unable to attend regular ESL classes and cannot be reached by other programs.

Volunteer Commitment
Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of at least six months. Hours are flexible and arranged with your student. We will try to place you with someone who lives in a convenient location, although there are no guarantees. Volunteers must attend a preparatory
5 hour training.

ESL and Computer Tutoring Program

< top>

Refugee Transitions' Newcomers Civic Involvement and Technology Empowerment Project helps refugees and immigrants to gain basic computer skills, while simultaneously improving their English language proficiency. Clients can receive either small-group instruction in the agency's community computer lab in Oakland or home-based instruction provided by trained volunteer tutors.

Volunteer Commitment
Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of at least six months. Hours are flexible and arranged with your student, and instruction takes place in the student's home. The project curriculum includes three components: (1) English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) instruction with an emphasis on increased civic involvement; (2) instruction in basic computer usage; and (3) career and/or educational advancement assistance.

Volunteers are expected to attend our basic orientation and five hours of preparatory trainings in order to participate in this project.

  Bridge 2-Success Youth Development Partnership

< top>

This program is based in San Francisco, Oakland and Fremont and provides immigrant and refugee youth the support and opportunities they need to succeed academically, develop career-readiness skills, form healthy attachments and to develop supportive relationships with adults and peers. Refugee Transitions recruits, trains, and matches volunteer tutors with refugee youth ages 6-18 for one-on-one tutoring and mentoring.

Volunteer Commitment
Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of at least nine months (at least one academic year) of meeting with a youth 1-2 times per week. Hours are flexible and arranged with your student. We will try to place you with someone who lives in a convenient location, although there are no guarantees. Volunteers must attend a preparatory 5 hour training.
