Refugee Transitions (, a nonprofit education and social service agency, is partnering with Catholic Charities Santa Clara County to support their Refugee Foster Program ( and is seeking qualified and committed individuals to provide one-on-one tutoring/mentoring for unaccompanied refugee minors.

Position: Academic Tutor

Time Commitment: 7.5 hours/week (3 sessions at 1.5 hours, including one weekend day for Santa Clara student/2 sessions at 1.5 hours for San Jose student) during the academic school year and summer

Salary: $18-$24/hour depending on qualifications and experience.

Location: In-Home Tutoring or Library (Santa Clara and San Jose)

Program/Employment Dates: Must be able to make an academic year commitment (beginning June 2019).


1. Tutoring and Enrichment

  • Tutor youth in high school subjects (English, Math, Biology)

  • Help youth develop confidence and feel a part of their high school community;

  • Promote language development, goal-setting, high school graduation, college or career-readiness, and cultural adjustment.

2. Coordination/Administrative

  • Communicate with Refugee Transitions’ staff to gain a better understanding of each youth’s academic needs;

  • Submit monthly logs of tutoring hours of progress to Refugee Transitions (online); and

  • Submit bi-monthly time sheets to Refugee Transitions.


  • Strong desire to help unaccompanied refugee minors succeed academically;

  • Patience and sensitivity for working with traumatized youth;

  • Ability to tutor non-native English speakers on multiple academic subjects;

  • Minimum 48 units of college credits;

  • Ability to connect with immigrant youth from African and Asian countries;

  • Flexibility and ability to work well independently and with minimal supervision;

  • Strong writing and communication skills in English; and

  • Experience working with diverse populations.


  • Bachelor’s degree

  • From a refugee or immigrant family;

  • Familiarity with small nonprofits; and

  • Strong administrative and organization skills.

Special requirements: Must be able to accept a weekend or evening assignment (until 7:30 p.m.) at least two evenings per week.
