Refugee Transitions (RT; is a nonprofit agency that provides education, family engagement, and community leadership programs to low-income refugee, asylee, and immigrant newcomers throughout the Bay Area. RT is hiring a English Language and Literacy Instructor to provide English language instruction at Oakland International High School.

Position Title: Adult English Language Instructor - Oakland International High School

Time Commitment: 18 hours of instruction and 7 hours of preparation time (hours for preparation time to be determined by the instructor and supervisor) as well as additional hours for meetings as needed.  The classes are offered Monday-Thursday (Level 1: 9:00-11:15 am and Level 2: 11:30 - 1:45 pm). The teaching schedule follows the Oakland Unified School District calendar (note: the class will not be offered during the summer). 

Location:  Oakland International High School (4521 Webster St, Oakland, CA 94609)

Starting - End Date: Testing and New Student Intake August 26-27, 2019, Classes Begin September 3, 2019 - December 20, 2019 and January 6, 2020 - May 28, 2020 Potential to teaching during Summer School TBD 

Reports to: Sonia Wong, Education Manager 

Compensation: The instructor will be compensated hourly (depending on education and experience) for classroom teaching time and preparation time for this hourly non-exempt position. Part-time benefits, including dental coverage, accrued vacation time, paid holidays (that fall on the employee's workday), accrued sick time, and eligibility for RT’s retirement plan after 1 year working 10+ hours per week.

Responsibilities are to:

  • Teach two English language and literacy classes for adults (level 1 targeting adults with very limited English and literacy skills; Level 2 targeting High Beginner and Low Intermediate Level adults)

  • Teach basic tech literacy (i.e., apps on phone, digital reader, Google maps, navigating community resources)

  • Work with Refugee Transitions’ staff to supplement the agency’s curriculum and help conduct pre-and post- language assessments (using CASAS)

  • Maintain online attendance sheets & submit progress reports as needed

  • Uphold RT’s systems of student enrollment and intake

  • Maintain the integrity of RT’s curriculum

  • Maintain professional relationship with site partners; and

  • Represent RT in a professional manner.

 Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach multi-level groups of adult English language learners

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Completion or near completion of MA TESOL, credential or TESOL certificate

  • Training and formal classroom experience teaching level English in the U.S. (to low-income newcomers)

  • Knowledge and experience in applying new and emerging technologies to facilitate and advance student learning

  • Experience creating and/or adapting lesson plans from existing curriculum, following program goals and language objectives

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Strong understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries

  • Enthusiasm for working with limited educational backgrounds and literacy skills

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • From a refugee or immigrant family

  • Proficiency in Spanish, Arabic and/or Tigrinya

  • Experience working with refugees or other newcomers who have experienced trauma

  • Experience teaching in a literacy program

  • Experience teaching computer literacy

  • Experience working with small nonprofits and organizations providing services in Oakland

  • Experience working at community or school sites in Oakland

  • Excellent administrative and organization skills

  • Experience with Dropbox, Google Docs & Microsoft office

  • Experience working with English language learners with interrupted education &/or limited literacy skills

Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare, and proofread documents; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; kneeling, bending of the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies.
