Associate Education Manager and Instructor

Kajal joined Refugee Transitions in April 2019 to fill the position of Adult English Language Instructor at Oakland International High School (OIHS). Today, Kajal works as an Associate Education Manager and Instructor. Along with overseeing and monitoring part of the agency’s youth programs and Behavioral Health Prevention & Early Intervention programs, she also teaches Refugee Transitions’ Vocational English and Citizenship classes at Harbor House.

An immigrant from Iran and fluent in Farsi, Kajal was introduced to the international humanitarian sphere and refugee resettlement while volunteering at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Oakland office, supporting newly arrived refugees in finding employment. Later, Kajal worked with IRC as a Resettlement Caseworker and Education Specialist, supporting newly arrived refugee families to make sure they have access to education services in Oakland and the East Bay. Her work at IRC helped her identify major gaps in early learning programs for refugee families with children between the ages of 0 to 5 years old. This brought her to her position as a Community Literacy Specialist with Tandem, Partners in Early Learning where, in collaboration with Refugee Transitions, she was able to bring early learning and literacy resources and support to newly arrived refugee families in non-formal education settings such as Adult English Language Learning classes. Prior to joining Refugee Transitions, Kajal worked as a consultant for two London-based organizations, supporting their efforts in developing safeguarding procedures and implementing community workshops for young refugees and unaccompanied asylum seekers to navigate life in the United Kingdom. Kajal received her B.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies with a minor in Public Policy from UC Berkeley, and holds a Master’s Degree in International Child Studies with a focus on Refugee Children's Right to Education from King's College, London.
