RIT Intern: Teacher Assistant and Alumni Tutor

Shaheen joined Refugee & Immigrant Transitions in February 2016. He was born in Afghanistan and speaks Dari, Pashto and some Arabic. He graduated from Oakland International High School (OIHS). He has an associate’s degree in Mathematics from Laney College, and he is currently attending California State University, East Bay (CSUEB). He assists as an Alumni Tutor at RIT after-school program in OIHS, as a Teacher’s Assistant at RIT Adult ESL classes, and as an Interpreter for Dari and Pashto speaking students. His experience has allowed him to connect and cultivate relationships with RIT students of varied ages and backgrounds. He considers Refugee & Immigrant Transitions as his other family and believes that interning with RIT has allowed him to be a part of something larger that makes a difference. Shaheen says, “Every day is different and I get to interact with such a varied groups of people from all around the world, and It means in order to help I am always learning and improving.”
