Geographic Area: Oakland
Students: Youth (High school)
Please note: Given the proximity to the end of the school year, we are not currently onboarding new volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for the Fall semester (starting in August), please fill out the Volunteer Interest Form, and we will notify you ASAP when we have scheduled a summer training date.
RT collaborates with Oakland International High School to find, train, and support volunteers to work in service of the school community. Volunteers are an integral part of providing support for students during a critical time in their language learning and growth.
A volunteer acts as another adult in the classroom to support the teacher, working with a group of students in the classroom. All classes use ESL techniques and build language capacity. No prior ESL teaching/tutoring experience is needed!
+ What is the time commitment?
Our primary needs are for long-term volunteers, who can commit to at least a semester or the school year on a consistent basis. Minimum commitment is 2-4 hours/week for an entire semester (preferred full year). This long-term commitment allows volunteers to build relationships at OIHS and RT, and become a real part of our joint community.
Hours are flexible. Daily school hours are M, T, Th, F: 8:20 am -3:15 pm, W: 8:20 am -2:55 pm.
• Willingness to work with an English Language Learner population in a classroom setting; • Cultural sensitivity; respect for students' boundaries and personal space; • No proselytization or solicitation allowed.

+ Short-term commitments
