Story Series
We are thrilled to announce RIT's Story Series!
By sharing stories from our volunteers, staff, board members, and students, we hope to expand our collective understanding of migration, uplift our diverse experiences, and humanize one another.
At this very divisive time, we disrupt dominant narratives that often paint immigrants & refugees as one-dimensional victims or villains. In its stead, we shed light on reasons why people in our community have migrated, nuances and diversities in their journeys, shared experiences starting anew, and kernels of wisdom for us to learn from and reflect upon. By uplifting these human stories, we hope to spark and foster connections between us. For it is through our learning of our diverse roots and understanding of shared humanity that we can break down barriers between us and build shared communities. So we welcome you to immerse yourselves in these stories and imagine a shared future grounded in collective care and well-being; and a more peaceful and just society.
The series begins with four individuals who came to the U.S. many years ago and now are part of RIT’s beloved community.
Sabrina (RIT volunteer): grew up in Afghanistan and left the country due to war, migrated to France and eventually to the U.S., and reflects on her Afghan-French identity.
Karim (RIT volunteer): born in the U.S. and immigrated to Iran and back, having to adapt to a new home multiple times growing up.
Todd (RIT board member): fled Vietnam after the war with his family as “boat people” and struggling with Vietnamese-Chinese-American identity.
[Coming Soon]
Amy (RIT board member): born and raised in a multicultural family in the Bay Area with grandparents from Nicaragua, and continues to build on a legacy that cultivates welcome and inclusion.
